Last night was my first so to speak college bible study. It wasn't your prototypical meeting to say the least, sure we met on a Wednesday night and we sang and talked and had a short devo but it was deeper then that. It is was outside on a porch almost a last minute get together so to speak but it was perfect to us. We sang and told stories and the world passed us by before our very eyes. People were dressed all different ways and everyone had a story as to why they were the way they were. As we sang I noticed how everyone had their own ways of worshiping, all right in their own way but yet still very different. There were those who simply seemed to study the pages, those who closed their eyes and tapped their foot, some through their arms up in the air and waved them like they just didn't care, then there was some that sat there quietly praising in their own unique way. It dawned on me............my burger/hot dog story was being put into play. In this devo I want to focus on the leadership side of things. I like to think of 5 leadership types when to comes to the gospel.
1. The Jesus Cheerleader - Now lets be honest here, we have all looked at people like this and said what the heck. These are your vocal leaders, the ones who stand up and dance and throw their arms in the air. I think at times we all have a little Jesus Cheerleader in us.
2. The Pitt Viper - This is the guy who relentlessly waits for an unbeliever to step into his territory so he can strike at them. Their number one goal is to strike once and to get their fangs into the person in order to convert them. The quick kill.
3. The Ivy League Bible Scholar - This one goes without saying, but this is the smartest guy you'll ever meet when it comes to biblical trivia. He is ready for every atheist, mormon, universalist, and muslim. He is the guy that you would call on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.'
4. The Courageous David - These are your rock solid leaders who lead by example not necessarily by words. Boy are they strong internally, they may not be the first to share their faith but if the challenge presents itself it's game on for them.
5. The Hybrid - This is the person who incorporates the traits above into one well oiled machine, he recognizes that different people react to different ways of sharing the gospel. Sometimes this guy is the one leading the chants, sometimes he sits back and lets it unfold. He is ready to strike like a viper and has the knowledge of the ivy leaguer, this is the guy that makes people ask "What's different about him?" This leader is the key to the success of spreading the gospel to all nations.
Christ created all of us different for a reason. He doesn't want a cheerleader all the time, he doesn't always need a smarty pants to be present, but God does need the hybrid christian, the one that is open minded enough to see all view points and react differently to every situation. Regardless of what type of leader you are Christ calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and with this I say to you; neighbors come in all shapes and sizes and we are truly looking to reach all of our neighbors then this "hybrid" is in each and everyone of us. It's up to you to put it to use.
